Cathay Pacific and Google are expanding AI-guided contrail avoidance into Asia-Pacific ultra-long-haul flights. More than 80 early flights achieved an estimated 40% reduction in contrail warming by giving crews avoidance routes before departure and in the cockpit.

Cathay Pacific has become Google's first commercial airline partner in Asia for contrail avoidance on ultra-long-haul flights. The system uses forecasts and AI to identify airspace where heat-trapping contrails are likely, then gives flight teams actionable routing data before departure and sends it to the cockpit. Pilots retain responsibility for the flight and make small altitude adjustments when operationally appropriate.
The expansion follows more than 80 early trial flights that Google says achieved roughly a 40% estimated reduction in the warming impact of contrails on flights following avoidance routes.
