Cathay Pacific has become Google's first commercial airline partner in Asia for contrail avoidance on ultra-long-haul flights. The system uses forecasts and AI to identify airspace where heat-trapping contrails are likely, then gives flight teams actionable routing data before departure and sends it to the cockpit. Pilots retain responsibility for the flight and make small altitude adjustments when operationally appropriate.

The expansion follows more than 80 early trial flights that Google says achieved roughly a 40% estimated reduction in the warming impact of contrails on flights following avoidance routes. It moves the method into live Asia-Pacific operations using existing aircraft, but it remains a trial: the climate effect is modeled, the sample is limited and fuel, weather and air-traffic tradeoffs still need broader validation.

What changed

Contrail avoidance had already been tested in North Atlantic operations. What changed is geographic and operational scale: Cathay is now Google's first commercial airline partner in Asia, applying the system to ultra-long-haul flights after more than 80 early flights generated a quantified result.

Why it matters

Aviation's climate problem is usually framed around new aircraft, engines and fuels that take years to deploy. Contrail avoidance offers a different industrial path: use AI, weather data and existing flight systems to change a small number of routes now.
