Google made geothermal the firm power behind its next data center.
Google has contracted 396 megawatts from Fervo Energy's Cape Station enhanced-geothermal project in Utah, with delivery expected in 2028. The agreement is designed to support a potential data center and includes an option for roughly 600 MW more by June 2030, taking Google's possible offtake close to one gigawatt.

Fervo and Google signed what the companies describe as the world's largest enhanced-geothermal power purchase agreement. The contracted output will come from Cape Station, a project already under construction in southwest Utah, and is intended to provide continuous carbon-free electricity rather than the intermittent output of wind or solar.
The agreement follows a smaller Fervo pilot that has supplied Nevada's grid since 2023 and a 115 MW arrangement with Google and NV Energy in 2024. It therefore adds a large commercial commitment to an operating technical lineage, although the Utah data center remains conditional on engineering, approvals and commercial terms, and the new power is not due until 2028.

What changed

Why it matters
AI data centers need firm electricity every hour, while grid interconnection delays and rising demand are making power availability a binding design constraint. This agreement gives enhanced geothermal a large, bankable customer and connects a drilling-intensive industrial technology to the buildout of AI infrastructure. If Cape Station delivers on schedule, the model could add continuous generation without shifting project costs to ordinary ratepayers and could be repeated where hot rock is available. The caveat is substantial: the data center is not yet approved, the contracted power arrives in 2028 and the optional 600 MW is not a firm order.
