London put learned autonomy into a live taxi service.
Uber and Wayve have launched London's first public robotaxi service with fewer than 20 Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles. Riders requesting ordinary Uber trips can be matched with Wayve's AI Driver, although a licensed safety operator remains behind the wheel while approval for fully driverless operation is still pending.

The launch makes London the second European city where Uber offers autonomous rides and puts Wayve's end-to-end driving system in front of paying passengers for the first time. The vehicles use cameras and radar rather than city-specific high-definition maps, and Wayve says the model learns from experience so it can adapt across roads, vehicles and weather conditions.
This is a deliberately constrained deployment, not a driverless breakthrough. Fewer than 20 vehicles are available, passengers may decline the match and a licensed operator can take control. Those limits make the signal more useful: the companies are testing whether a learned autonomy stack can enter normal fleet operations before regulators authorize the removal of human supervision.

What changed
Wayve and Uber had already received private-hire vehicle licenses and collected more than 100,000 expressions of interest. What changed is operational: the service is now live, ordinary Uber riders can be matched with the vehicles and Wayve's AI Driver is carrying members of the public in London traffic.

Why it matters
Autonomous transport has largely scaled through tightly mapped, city-specific systems in the United States and China. Wayve is testing a different industrial architecture: an end-to-end learned driver intended to generalize across vehicles and places without bespoke high-definition maps. A live London service puts that claim into fleet operations, maintenance, rider support and regulatory oversight rather than a closed demonstration. Success could lower the work required to enter new cities and make vehicle-agnostic autonomy more commercially useful. The constraint is equally important: safety operators remain in every car, so the launch does not yet prove unattended operation or unit economics.
