Runner-up · Mining · Physics AI
Fortescue moves physics AI from research into mining operations.
Fortescue signed a multi-year agreement to integrate PhysicsX models and simulation tools into mining, metals and engineering workflows after more than two years of joint research.

PhysicsX and Fortescue expanded their collaboration through a new multi-year agreement that makes PhysicsX a key AI technology and innovation partner. The work moves beyond its initial research focus toward production, operations and technology development across Fortescue's mining and metals business.
PhysicsX combines large physics models, conventional simulation and engineering applications trained on simulated and experimental data. Its teams will work with Fortescue engineers to integrate the platform into existing workflows and build internal capability. Fortescue already coordinates more than 200 autonomous haul trucks and other operating systems through its Perth control center, but the partners did not identify the first physics-AI use case, baseline or target result.

What changed
The companies had collaborated for more than two years on industrial research. The October 27 agreement changes the scope and duration: PhysicsX will now work inside Fortescue's engineering workflows on real mining and metals operating problems under a multi-year partnership.
02
Why it matters
Mining decisions connect geology, equipment, energy, materials and process behavior, so detailed simulation can be too slow for repeated operational choices. Learned physical models could let engineers test more alternatives before changing a live asset, mine plan or process. Fortescue is a meaningful proving ground because it already operates autonomous fleets and integrated remote control at scale. The announcement is still a commitment rather than a measured deployment result; practitioners should demand a named decision, the conventional method it replaces, validation error, engineering time saved and the production or reliability consequence.
03
What to watch
Watch for the first named mine, asset or process; integration with Fortescue's Hive operating systems; model-validation tolerances; engineering cycle time; production, energy or maintenance effects; user adoption; and whether a successful workflow is repeated across sites.
Why it was a runner-up
The operational scope is strategically broad, but the partners have not named the first production use case or published a measured result comparable with Percepto's transmission contract.
Impact: 88/100 · Confidence: 88/100
PhysicsX publishes the agreement and includes direct confirmation from Fortescue's AI and IT director. Fortescue's own operating documentation corroborates the scale and digital maturity of the mining environment. Confidence is high in the partnership, but the first use case and performance evidence are not public.
