FANUC doubles classrooms for automation training.

FANUC opened what it calls the largest corporate robotics and industrial-automation training center in the United States, expanding its network to roughly 17,500 annual training places.

Industrial Automation: FANUC doubles classrooms for automation training.
An automation skills pipeline expands around working industrial robots and CNC simulators.

The Auburn Hills, Michigan, facility replaces FANUC America's prior headquarters training operation and increases the classroom count from 13 to 28. The three-story academy covers 132,000 square feet, including 56,300 square feet of training space with more than 160 industrial robots and over 40 CNC simulators.

FANUC says the expanded academy and eight regional facilities can train about 17,500 technicians, engineers, educators, students and manufacturing professionals each year. The $18 million academy complements a separate $90 million Michigan manufacturing expansion, but the company has not yet published completion, certification, placement or customer-deployment outcomes from the new capacity.

01

What changed

FANUC announced the academy and broader Michigan investment earlier in 2026. The October 19 milestone is operational: the expanded facility has opened, its equipment and classrooms are in place, and the higher training capacity is now available to manufacturers and education partners.

02

Why it matters

Factories cannot sustain more robots, CNC systems and AI-enabled automation without people who can program, integrate, troubleshoot and maintain them. A larger hands-on training operation addresses a practical scaling constraint that equipment purchases alone do not solve. FANUC's installed base and education network give the academy a route into real customer workflows, but physical capacity is only an input. Its industrial value should be measured through credentials earned, technician availability, reduced commissioning time, faster recovery from failures and the share of graduates who move into operating roles.

03

What to watch

Watch annual enrollment and completion, certification results, employer participation, graduate placement, waiting times for customer training, regional access, technician retention and whether FANUC customers report faster commissioning or lower automation downtime.

Why it was a runner-up

The academy is a real operating asset with broad workforce reach, but it does not yet provide evidence that training capacity has increased factory output or accelerated customer deployments.

Impact: 85/100 · Confidence: 83/100

FANUC provides precise investment, floor-space, equipment and capacity figures, while DBusiness and manufacturing trade outlets confirm the opening. Confidence is high in the physical facility and stated capacity; outcome evidence is not yet available and independent coverage largely relies on company data.
