Coca-Cola’s mixed-case picking becomes a six-robot system.

Swire Coca-Cola, a Coca-Cola bottling partner in China and the western United States, has put three heavy-load picking robots and three automated guided vehicles into commercial operation at its Zhengzhou plant.

Robotics: Coca-Cola’s mixed-case picking becomes a six-robot system.
Three pickers and three guided vehicles turn mixed cases into one coordinated production flow.

The Zhengzhou system combines three SAI picking robots developed with Seth Robotics and three automated guided vehicles (AGVs), mobile machines that move materials along controlled plant routes. The 40-kilogram-class platform can lift as many as four beverage packs per cycle and is designed for continuous mixed-case picking.

Swire reports a peak rate of 600 cases an hour and accuracy approaching 100%, with the system operating around the clock. The company plans deployments in Nanjing, Hefei and Guangzhou next year. South China Morning Post independently reported the operating deployment, though the performance figures remain company supplied.

01

What changed

Robotic arms and guided vehicles are established in beverage plants. What changed is a commercial six-robot cell coordinating heavy mixed-case picking and material movement, with disclosed payload, peak throughput and a named multi-plant expansion plan.

02

Why it matters

Mixed-case picking is physically repetitive but operationally variable, making it a harder automation target than uniform pallet handling. Coordinating pickers with mobile transport can remove manual lifting, extend operating hours and turn order patterns into machine instructions. The deployment also exposes the practical limits of plant robotics: peak speed does not reveal sustained throughput, damaged-pack handling, changeover time or human interventions. If the next three plants reproduce the result across different layouts and product mixes, Swire will have evidence for a reusable beverage-fulfillment architecture rather than a single-site cell.

03

What to watch

Watch sustained hourly throughput, order accuracy over complete shifts, manual intervention frequency, damaged-package rates, worker-injury changes, changeover time and whether the Nanjing, Hefei and Guangzhou systems reuse the same software and mechanical design.

Why it was a runner-up

The deployment is commercial and physically integrated, but throughput and accuracy figures come from the operator and cover one plant, giving it narrower strategic reach than the grid and cooling developments.

Impact: 85/100 · Confidence: 93/100

Swire documents the installed robot count, payload, peak throughput, operating model and rollout plan, while South China Morning Post independently confirms the plant deployment. Confidence is high in the installation; performance methodology and sustained-shift results are not disclosed.
