Digit’s next scale constraint is safe proximity.
Agility unveiled Digit 5, a humanoid redesigned for cooperatively safe work near people after its prior generation logged more than 65,000 hours across commercial sites. The new architecture adds independent safety control, repeated 50-pound lifting, nine-minute charging for a 90-minute run and integration with existing warehouse and manufacturing systems.
Digit 5 uses AI-based human detection, visual and audible intent cues and an independent safety controller that can avoid, stop or seat the robot when a person enters an unsafe distance. Agility says the design draws on three years of Digit 4 use at customers including GXO, Schaeffler, Amazon and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada.
The operational record is substantial for a humanoid category, including more than 65,000 hours and 100,000 totes at GXO with about 98% on-task accuracy. But the new model itself remains in development: early access is planned for the first half of 2027 and general availability by year-end, while several safety features and specifications may still change.

What changed
Digit had already reached commercial customer sites. What changed with the September 15 release is an architecture explicitly built around the next deployment barrier—working near people without conventional fencing—plus concrete payload, charging, reach and safety-control changes derived from that field history.

Why it matters
Humanoids will not scale through versatility claims alone. They must share human-designed aisles, hand work between conveyors and mobile robots, sustain useful duty cycles and produce a safety case that plant engineers can approve. Digit 5 focuses on those constraints with independent safety control, local sensing and a much higher run-to-charge ratio. Its strongest evidence comes from the prior generation’s operating history, not yet the new model. That distinction matters: customers have shown demand, but certification, repeatable mixed-traffic performance and maintenance economics will decide whether orders become fleet deployments.

What to watch
Watch independent safety evaluations, the final ANSI and ISO humanoid standards, early-access customer results, mean time between incidents and achieved productive hours per day. The key proof will be a Digit 5 fleet working beside people without sacrificing throughput or adding hidden supervision labor.
