Factory AI is entering through retrofit tablets, not new machines.
Harmoni is putting context-aware AI at existing manufacturing work centers through retrofit tablets, RFID and integrations with machines and enterprise systems. The company says its platform is active at about 40 factories, mostly in aerospace and defense, while its new HAL assistant uses live job, machine, process and engineering context to guide production decisions.
The retrofit model centers on tablets mounted at legacy equipment rather than replacement machines. Operators use the interface for jobs, work instructions, quality checks, labor tracking and support requests, while Harmoni joins ERP, machine, operator and RFID data into a real-time operational view. HAL uses that context to explain requirements, diagnose issues, identify risks and suggest next actions at the work center.
Harmoni says deployments take weeks and that customer automations recover more than 200 productive hours per operator each year. Independent reporting places the installed base at roughly 40 customers, but the performance claims are not independently audited. The same announcement disclosed a $10 million Series A; funding is not the qualifying event, and the score reflects the live factory layer rather than the financing.

What changed

Why it matters
Most factories cannot justify replacing serviceable equipment simply to make AI easier to deploy. A retrofit layer can create the missing operational context—what job is active, which revision applies, what the machine is doing and where a request is blocked—without waiting for a greenfield plant. That makes older assets addressable, but it also concentrates risk in data quality, operator adoption and integration discipline. Buyers should separate the value of a connected work-center system from the novelty of the assistant and demand measured reductions in errors, administrative time, response time and unplanned downtime.

Watch for independently verified results at named factories, retention after pilots, integration depth with older controls and evidence that HAL recommendations change operating outcomes. Operator override rates and time-to-resolution will matter more than the volume of questions asked.
